North-western cycle route

Auckland City Council has finished maintenance work on a section of the North-western cycleway, between Patiki and Rosebank roads. The work was completed as quickly and safely as possible and is now open to the public.

The North-western cycle route is approximately nine kilometres long and follows the general alignment of the North-western motorway, running from central Auckland to Waterview and forming a vital link from Waterview to the Te Atatu cycleway. Commuters and recreational cyclists can now enjoy cycling into the city or out west along a direct and continuous cycle route.

The cycle route also gives Auckland City's western suburbs a link to the edge of the CBD that avoids busy roads such as Great North Road and New North Road.

Sixty per cent of the cycle route is exclusive cycleway; the remaining forty per cent makes use of existing walkways, footpaths and local streets. It is a direct and pleasant route that can be used by cyclists for commuting or recreation purposes.

Part of Auckland's cycle network

The North-western cycle route is an integral and important part of a much larger cycle network that Auckland City has outlined in its cycling and walking strategy. Through the strategy, Auckland City is committed to developing a series of on and off-road cycle and pedestrian routes.

Cycle signals at St Lukes Road

A special feature of the new cycleway is specially designed traffic signals for cyclists, which have been installed where the cycleway crosses St Lukes Road in Western Springs.

Underground detectors are activated when bikes park on the diamond markings on the cycle lane. If the bike is not parked over this area, then the detector will not activate and some non-metal bikes may not be detected. Alternatively the pedestrian crossing button will activate both the pedestrian green light and the cycle crossing light. Pedestrians should only use the pedestrian crossing button, as they will require a longer time to cross the road than cyclists.

Similar cycle crossings already operate in Christchurch, but this is the first of its kind in Auckland.
