Extending Pay and Display parking
Auckland
City Council's proposal to extend on-street Pay and Display operating hours to
10pm in the CBD is designed to give a helping hand to the city's retail,
hospitality and entertainment businesses by improving the public's access to
on-street parking.
The proposal is designed to assist evening visitors to find an available on-street park.
Pay and display machine.
On-street Pay and Display parking in the CBD's busiest streets between 6pm and 10pm would be available at half the normal tariff, with no restriction on the length of time you park for.
Consultation closed 5pm, Friday October 16.
The consultation process is being undertaken in conjunction with a six-month trial underway at present that has extended Pay and Display to 10pm around some streets surrounding the Viaduct Basin.
Rationale for proposal:
Pay and Display hours currently end at 6pm. At present, after these hours in the
inner-city, CBD residents and employees are parking in many of the on-street
spaces, which negatively affects CBD businesses and people seeking parking to
visit them.
Entertainment areas have expanded and high density apartment style living has
increased. Residential population of the CBD has increased from less than 2,000
in 1991 to close to 18,000 in 2006, with a matching increase in demand for
parking.
Council is encouraging inner-city residents to park in off-street parking
buildings (available for less than $100 per month), to free up on-street spaces.
Where to from here
Results from the consultation were reported and tabled at the 5th November Transport Committee meeting.
The report also contained data derived from the pay and display extension trial currently underway in the Viaduct.
The Transport Committee endorsed a report that recommended that Pay and Display hours remain as they are currently.
The trial in the Viaduct area remains underway and will continue to do so until February 2010.
