Bike better
Bike Better is a fantastic opportunity for Primary and
Intermediate students across Auckland to be involved in a cycle safety activity
programme.
It's lots of fun and works on giving kids who already cycle to
school the safety skills and confidence to cycle in the safest way possible.
Every day many Auckland students get to school by biking. Cycling to school is
an excellent way to build exercise into your day while reducing traffic around
schools and local neighbourhoods.
If you are interested in getting the Bike Better programme
at your school please contact us.
Through the Bike Better programme student cyclists will
learn about:
- Road safety awareness and skills
- Bicycle maintenance
- Clever route planning
A highlight of the day is always the biking obstacle
course; where students are challenged to use their new and improved cycling
skills to turn sharp corners, signal correctly, compete in the "go slow" race
and ride over low ramps. Completing a course like this is a huge confidence
builder. Combining that with proper bicycle maintenance and a safe travel plan,
Bike Better can really be the start of a sustainable, safe and fun way for
students to get to school each day.
Auckland City Council Road Safety Co-ordinators deliver the programme
by liaising with a teacher, school contact or parent. We supply a great
booklet with quizzes, visual safety aids, checklists and planning pages.
We also have some cool prizes and rewards for the programme.
Bike Better was trialled successfully in four Auckland
schools in 2007. We are passionate about equipping children with the necessary
skills to cycle safely. If you are a student, parent or teacher and are
passionate about that too, please contact
us.
