Auckland City Council in partnership with Auckland Regional Transport Authority aims to create
travel alternatives for school students other than being dropped off by car, and
ultimately reduce school-related travel congestion and safety issues.
School-related travel is a major contributor to Auckland's
traffic congestion, with school car journeys estimated as doubling since the
mid-1980s.
School travel-related crashes are another issue the programme
aims to reduce - in the last five years there have been more than 200 on-road
crashes involving children under 15 years old in Auckland city, with over half
of these occurring on journeys to and from school.
Under the Travelwise programme, school communities
are initially surveyed to get their views on potential barriers to safe and
active transport to school. These surveys form the basis for developing a
customised school travel plan.
Auckland City Council is currently working with 54 schools in various stages of
development and implementation.
School travel plans include
engineering, educational and enforcement measures to encourage students to think
about alternative ways to get to school, rather than by car.
