Education in Auckland's CBD

Over the last six years, the education sector has been the fastest growing sector of employment in the CBD, with a 10.1 per cent average annual employment growth rate. This is above the rest of the CBD and the education sector in the rest of Auckland.

Facts about education in the CBD:Classroom

  • In 2006, 7080 people were employed in the education sector in Auckland's CBD, and increase of 430 employees since 2004. The CBD has also increased its share of Auckland city's education sector employment, rising from 32 per cent in 2004 to 35 per cent in 2006.
  • In the CBD, post-school education comprises 79 per cent of all education employment. This is due to the presence of two large university campuses (University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology) and other higher education providers.
  • Two thirds of Auckland city's and over half of Auckland region's post-school education is located within the CBD. Employment in post school education has also grown faster in the CBD than in the city or region.  
  • There were 37,924 students enrolled at University of Auckland and 22,822 at AUT in 2006. This is an overall increase of approximately 1,000 students since 2004.
  • The number of foreign fee-paying students in Auckland's CBD in 2006 was 28,581 - representing 31 per cent of all foreign fee-paying enrolments in New Zealand and 58 per cent of all enrolments in the Auckland region.
