Auckland's CBD at a glance
Location: Auckland's CBD is at the heart of the Auckland
region. It is a triangular area bounded by the Waitemata Harbour and the central
motorway system.
Area: 433 hectares - similar in size to Sydney's CBD but
double that of Wellington's, Christchurch's and Brisbane's CBDs. Auckland's CBD
is 40 per cent smaller than Perth's.
Residents: The CBD has 17,937 residents living in 8,289
households. This is 4.43% of Auckland city's population. 84% of the residents in
the CBD are below 44 years old.
The number of CBD residents has more than doubled since
2001, when there were 8,977 people living in 3,771 households, representing 2.5
per cent of Auckland city's population. In 1991, there were only 1,400 CBD
residents or 0.5 per cent of the city's population.
Workforce: Approximately 78,000 people work in the CBD,
making it the largest employment centre in New Zealand. It has 26 per cent of
all jobs in Auckland city and nearly 13 per cent of jobs in the Auckland region.
Businesses: There are almost 9,500 businesses in the CBD,
representing 18 per cent of businesses in Auckland city. The largest business
sectors in terms of employment are finance and insurance, property and business
services.
Transport: Approximately 73,000 people enter the CBD
between 7am and 9am each weekday. Of these:
- approximately 41,000 people (56 per cent) come by car
- 29,328 (40 per cent) come by passenger transport - buses
and to a lesser extent rail and ferries
- 3,435 (4 per cent) walk or cycle.
Largest building: Vero Building at 48 Shortland Street.
Tallest building: At 328 metres (more than a thousand feet)
the Sky Tower is the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere.
Oldest building: Worker's cottage at 1 Bankside Street,
built between 1841 and 1847.
