CBD population, household and income profile
Household size and income
- Areas closer to the waters edge (Viaduct Harbour, City Waterfront,
Britomart and Arena) have a higher share of households in the higher income
brackets and a lower share in lower income brackets than the rest of the
CBD.
- The University, Upper Queen and Vincent areas have higher shares of
households (33, 30 and 25 per cent respectively) in the lowest income
bracket than the rest of the CBD.
- The University area has the largest average household size (3.19 people)
in the CBD.
- The higher income areas, the City Waterfront and Viaduct Harbour areas,
have smaller average household sizes (1.90 and 1.84 people respectively)
than the rest of the CBD. Old Town (188 people) and Eden Crescent (1.82
people) also have comparatively low household sizes.
Population
- The Victoria and eastern (Eden Crescent, Upper Queen and University)
areas have experienced the largest population growth in the CBD between 2001
and 2006.
- In both 2001 and 2006, the University and Constitution Hill areas had
the youngest age profiles in the CBD. In 2006, the Upper Queen area also had
a younger age profile. Conversely, the Viaduct Harbour, City Waterfront and
Britomart areas had older age profiles than the rest of the CBD in both 2001
and 2006. In 2001, the K Road area also had an older age profile, however,
this has changed to become a lot younger in 2006.
- In areas close to the waterfront the population has aged into more
middle aged brackets.
