Communicating about sustainability

Sustainability discussion forum

Auckland City Council staff looking at the Keeping Auckland's future bright document. As an organisation we recognise that our staff have plenty of good ideas about how to become more sustainable. On our intranet the council has discussion forums set up to discuss and debate a wide variety of topics. One of these is set up purely as a sustainability and urban design forum.

This forum allows people to freely test out ideas on peers, discuss relevant sustainability issues, comment on what we are doing as a council and talk about sustainability in general.

Sustainability champions

The council has a group of people known as sustainability champions who advocate sustainability throughout the organisation.

They are a group of volunteers who know we can do better and care enough to want to help. Our sustainability champions are the local 'Jiminy crickets' to keep good sustainable behaviour in the consciousness of their fellow employees as well as assisting with ideas and feedback on different campaign initiatives.

Education

Throughout the year Auckland City Council hosts presentations and staff engage in learning opportunities to increase our knowledge and skill around sustainability topics.

The urban design group within council regularly hold lunchtime learning sessions for staff. The presentations are of a high calibre ranging from highly regarded urban design and planning professionals to films about contemporary issues including climate change, development and growth.
