Purpose of the introductory guide
The Introduction to crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is one of the first steps towards
creating greater awareness and integration of safe design principles into the planning, design, development, management and
maintenance of the built environment and public spaces of Auckland city.
The purpose of this introductory guide is:
- to raise awareness amongst council officers and contractors, urban planners, architects and developers about CPTED
principles and to facilitate understanding of their importance for creating safe environments
- to encourage the integration of CPTED principles into the planning, design, development, management and maintenance of
our built environment and public open spaces
- to pave the way towards more formalised council requirements and processes to integrate CPTED in both the public and
private sectors
- to be included in the package that is developed for the subsequent CPTED training for council staff and contractors
- to promote more debate, discussion and liaison amongst professional groups about planning for safety.
Overall, this introductory guide is intended to assist with the application of CPTED principles in Auckland City. This
document is introductory only and non-statutory with regards to the district plan. It is followed by an operational guide
for council, CPTED guidelines which takes CPTED into a range of different contexts in our built environment.
