Hamburg - strategic alliance

Hamburg Animation Award 2010 Summary sheet

Auckland and Hamburg signed a strategic alliance in 2007 to support opportunities for growth in key sectors and to encourage best practice learning, particularly in the areas of tourism, education, trade, services, biotechnology and creative industries.

As part of the strategic alliance and in support of the city's creative sector, Auckland City Council is promoting the annual Hamburg Animation Award.

This summary provides an outline of the award process. Tender documents providing full information are available at Hamburg Animation Award website.

The seventh Hamburg Animation Award will take place in Hamburg, Germany on 5 July 2010.

Official Hamburg Animation Award prizes

The three best animations are awarded as follows:

  • 1st prize: Hamburg Animation Award (EUR 5,000 approximately NZ$ 10,000)
  • 2nd prize: Hamburg Animation Award (EUR 3,000 approximately NZ$ 6,000)
  • 3rd prize: Hamburg Animation Award (EUR 2,000 approximately NZ$ 4,000)

There is also an audience award (EUR 888, approximately NZ$ 1,750) for the most popular film.

All award winners are invited to attend an animation workshop by a leading animation expert in Hamburg on 6 July 2010. Selected entries will feature at a public screening in Hamburg on 6 July 2010.

A jury of European film studio executives, chaired by Walt Disney Feature Animation character designer Harald Siepermann, will judge the three official Hamburg Animation Award prizes. Entries will be judged based on a good, well-told story and a unique or completely novel style.

Auckland prizes

In addition, a local panel will judge the Auckland entries and select one or more Auckland winner(s) to receive prizes sponsored by local industry.

All Auckland entries to the Hamburg Animation Awards will feature at a local film night in July 2010, organised by Auckland City Council, to an audience of industry representatives, education institutes, friends and families.

To be eligible for an Auckland prize, the applicant (or one representative if a team entry) must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident either living or studying within the Auckland regional boundaries at the time of the application, as well as at the time of the awards ceremony and film evening. The Auckland winner(s) must also be available to attend the local film night in Auckland in July 2010.
