Hamburg - strategic alliance
Hamburg Animation Award 2009
Summary sheet
Auckland and Hamburg signed a strategic alliance in 2007 to support opportunities for growth in business activities and to encourage best practice learning, particularly in the areas of tourism, education, trade, services, biotechnology and creative industries.
As part of the strategic alliance and in support of the city's creative sector, Auckland City Council is promoting the annual Hamburg Animation Award.
This summary provides an outline of the award process. Tender documents providing full and absolute information are available at
Hamburg Animation Award website.
The sixth Hamburg Animation Award 2009 will take place in Hamburg, Germany on 25 June 2009.
Official Hamburg Animation Award prizes
The three best animations are awarded as follows:
- 1st prize: Hamburg Animation Award 2009 (EUR 5,000 approximately NZ$ 12,000)
- 2nd prize: Hamburg Animation Award 2009 (EUR 3,000 approximately NZ$ 7,000)
- 3rd prize: Hamburg Animation Award 2009 (EUR 2,000 approximately NZ$ 4,500)
There is also an audience award (EUR 888, approximately NZ$ 2,000) for the most popular film.
A jury in Hamburg, which includes European film studio executives, will judge the three official Hamburg Animation Award prizes. Entries will be judged based on a well-told story and unique or completely novel style.
Auckland prizes
Any Auckland entry that wins one of the top three prizes (or the highest ranked prize if more than one Auckland winner) at the Hamburg Animation Award will receive one return economy airfare from Auckland to Hamburg and five nights accommodation in Hamburg to collect their prize at the award ceremony.
The winner (or one representative if a winning group) must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident either living or studying within the Auckland City Council boundaries at the time of the application, as well as at the time of the awards ceremony and film evening.
The Auckland winner(s) must also be available to attend the local film night in Auckland in July 2009.
In addition, a panel of local industry experts will judge the Auckland entries and select an Auckland winner, who will be awarded an internship with Flux Animation. We are working with C4 on screening opportunities.
All Auckland entries to the Hamburg Animation Awards will feature at a local film night in July 2009 to an audience of industry representatives, education institutes, friends and families.
