Fukuoka
- sister city
Background
The Auckland-Fukuoka sister city agreement was signed in 1986, following a sister port relationship between Hakata Port and Ports of Auckland, signed in 1979.
Auckland has enjoyed a very active relationship with Fukuoka, focussing on
tourism, education, youth, cultural and community initiatives.
For information about Fukuoka, visit
Fukuoka City Online, the official website of Fukuoka City Hall.
Some examples of programmes
Asian-Pacific Children's Convention (APCC)
Every year Fukuoka invites junior ambassadors to participate in the APCC, which aims to foster multi-cultural understanding in youth from the Asia Pacific region.
Participants attend a 5-6 day exchange camp with children from many different countries, followed by a
4-5 day homestay experience with a Japanese family.
From 2009, council has worked with a different intermediate school each year to administer the programme. All intermediate schools in the Auckland City Council area
are invited to apply annually. For more information, please
contact us.
The school selected from applications for the 2009 exchange was Avondale Intermediate.
Eight of their 11-year-old students travelled to Fukuoka in July/August
2009.
Read about the experiences of the junior ambassadors from 2008.
Former participants of the APCC are encouraged to join the Bridge Club. This
is both a local and
international network of junior ambassadors, who remain in contact to promote international understanding and work towards becoming tomorrow's global leaders.
Former participants are also welcome to apply to be the peace ambassador at the 2010 APCC.
Applications for this wonderful opportunity to return to Japan as a guest of
Fukuoka will be available on this webpage at the beginning of 2010.
Asian-Pacific City Summit
Asia-Pacific city leaders meet every two years to share their views and
experiences regarding urban administration and important issues facing the
region.
