Guangzhou
- sister city
Background
The Auckland-Guangzhou sister city agreement was signed in 1989, in response to a strong desire by the large population of local Chinese residents from Guangdong Province to link Guangzhou (capital of Guangdong) with Auckland.
Auckland has enjoyed a very active relationship with Guangzhou, including a wide variety of tourism, trade, education, sport, cultural, municipal administration and community initiatives.
The current focus is on increasing mutually beneficial economic outcomes.

Some examples of programmes
Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival (GZDOC)
This is the largest documentary festival in China and this year the Documentary New Zealand Trust (DOCNZ), with support from Film Auckland and Auckland City Council, has secured New Zealand as the focus country.
Film submissions and competition entries have now closed for the festival, which takes place from 29 November - 13 December 2009. The event also features an industry summit from 7-11 December, attracting international filmmakers, producers and other film sector representatives.
DOCNZ are programming the New Zealand screening component of the festival. Both DOCNZ and Film Auckland will take part in Auckland/New Zealand activities during the festival in Guangzhou and are keen to hear from anyone who has submitted their work and/or would like to attend.
For further information, please visit www.gzdoc.com or contact DOCNZ (alex@docnz.org.nz) or Film Auckland (michael@filmauckland.com).
