Hamburg - strategic alliance
Background
Extensive research by council identified Hamburg as the best match for a strategic alliance, which was signed in 2007.
Auckland and Hamburg identified areas of best practice learning and agreed to support opportunities for growth in key sectors, particularly creative industries, biotechnology and education.

Some examples of programmes
Hamburg Animation Award
New Zealand was selected as the profile country for the 2008 Hamburg Animation Award.
Auckland's involvement was very successful: the two winning entries of the country award came from animation schools in the Auckland region, as did 25 of the total 27 New Zealand entries.
The winners received a cash prize and an all expenses paid trip to Hamburg to attend the award ceremony.
In 2009, Auckland animation schools put forward another 15 impressive entries. One Auckland entry won third prize in the overall competition. A representative of the winning group travelled to Hamburg to collect the prize money.
For more information on the 2009 competition, please read
this story, the
2009 summary sheet or visit the
Hamburg Animation Awards website.
More information on the 2010 competition will be available in early 2010. The deadline to submit animations will be in May 2010.
Video conferences
Hamburg and Auckland run a regular series of video conferences in order to share learning and expertise, as well as connect like-minded people from both external organisations and within council.
The topics have included sustainability, city development, transport, relations with China and creative industries.
Internship opportunity
In 2009, Auckland City Council offered an internship opportunity to a tertiary student from Hamburg in response to numerous requests by German students to gain practical experience at our organisation.
