Los
Angeles - sister city
Background
The Auckland-Los Angeles sister city agreement was the first to be signed, in 1971, following the commencement of Air New Zealand's new service to Los Angeles via Honolulu.
The cities have undertaken cultural and educational exchanges in the past, and shared information in the areas of emergency procedures and civil defence.
The present and future focus with Los Angeles is projects in tourism and business development.
For information about Los Angeles, visit the official
website of the City of Los Angeles.
Some examples of programmes
Los Angeles Sister City Visiting Journalist Scholarship
Los Angeles runs an annual journalist scholarship, providing an opportunity for sister city journalists to participate in a week-long development programme abroad.
Applications are accepted from approximately September to December, with the programme taking place early the following year.
Glenda Wakeham, a senior producer for Radio New Zealand, took part in the 2008 programme and said "it was a great opportunity to have a good look at Los Angeles, the LA beyond the Hollywood sign. As journalism fellows, we were introduced to a wide range of people, who had their fingers on the pulse of the city. Los Angeles is so sprawling and represents so many different things to a diverse range of ethnicities. All the people we met during the whirlwind week were gracious and generous hosts."
Inbound journalist programme
In order to profile Auckland as an international tourist destination, council worked with Tourism Auckland to include a leading Los Angeles travel writer on their visiting journalist programme in April 2009. The journalist, who freelances for the Los Angeles Times, travel supplements and gourmet magazines, spent a week experiencing all Auckland has to offer.
