Background

The Auckland-Busan sister city agreement was signed in 1996, in response to the growing importance of South Korea to the New Zealand economy.

Auckland's relationship with Busan has included tourism, education, cultural, municipal administration and community initiatives.

The present and future focus with Busan is on economic initiatives in the film and education sectors.

For information about Busan, visit Dynamic Busan, the official English website of Busan Metropolitan City.

Every year, Busan Metropolitan Government sends employees to The University of Auckland's English Language Academy for eight weeks of paid tuition and a home stay experience.

Film industry support

BIFCOM (Busan International Film Commission and Industry Showcase)

The Busan International Film Commission and Industry Showcase (BIFCOM) is a key event for the screen industry in the Asia-Pacific region, attracting participation from over 20 countries.

Due to Auckland's sister city relationship with Busan, Auckland City Council worked with Busan Metropolitan Government to organise a programme for Film Auckland's executive manager who attended BIFCOM 2008.

The programme included site inspections of studios and postproduction facilities, as well as meetings with key film industry people from Busan.
