While this project is currently on hold until funding
becomes available, the aim of this work is to make walking and cycling
improvements in the town centre that include creating safer access points for
pedestrians, improving facilities at main crossing points and increasing cycle
parking.
Below is the refined and preferred proposal for walking and
cycling improvements in Glen Innes.
Apirana Avenue - between St Heliers Bay Road and Eastview
Road
Apirana Ave, St Heliers Bay Road end (710kb)

Apirana Ave, Eastview Road end (719kb)

Key features:
- On-road uphill cycle lanes on western side only to give cyclists riding
uphill a safe space to travel, while retaining on-street parking on one side
of the road.
- Pedestrian refuge located near Eastview Road will assist pedestrians
crossing at this point.
Glen Innes town centre
Line Road between Taniwha Street and Merton Road
Line Road (759kb)

Taniwha Street - between Line Road and Apirana Avenue
Taniwha Street (837kb)

Key features:
- Raised pedestrian crossings and footpaths to improve pedestrian
priority, safety and access to community services and shops.
Merton Road - between Apirana Avenue and Morrin Road
Merton Road, Apirana Avenue to Morrin Road (176kb)

Key features:
- On-road cycle lanes both sides to provide better cycle access to the
university campus, town centre, railway station.
- Retains on-street parking in some sections, but some loss of on-street
parking that is currently used for park n ride (note that options for
offsetting this loss of parking would be investigated at the same time).
Merton Road - between Morrin Road and College Road
Merton Road, College Road end (148kb)

Merton Road, central section (124kb)

Merton Road, Morrin Road end (123kb)

Key features:
- On-road cycle lane on northern side of road.
- Council is investigating a new footpath between Morrin and College
roads, which is expected to include a cycle path. This would allow
on-street parking to be retained (it is well-used during the weekend for
access to sports facilities).
Apirana Avenue and Pilkington Road from Merton Road to
Jellicoe Road
Apirana Ave, Merton Road end (876kb)

Apirana Ave/Pilkington Road (810kb)

Pilkington Road to Jellicoe Road (787kb)

Key feature:
On-road cycle lanes both directions, which would connect
Glen Innes and Panmure, providing a significant section of the citywide cycle
network.
