Waikaraka cycleway
The Waikaraka cycleway is part of the council's package of sustainable
transport solutions, and aims to make cycling a better, safer and more
attractive travel choice. It is one of the main cycleways to be built as part of
Auckland City Council's
cycling and walking strategy.
The Waikaraka cycleway will run from Pikes Point in Onehunga to Hillsborough
Road in Mt Roskill. The cycleway has been designed to give existing cyclists a
safe alternative to major roads, and ultimately make cycling more attractive to
potential cyclists. It will also encourage more people to enjoy and access the
Mt Roskill volcanic cone.
Main parts of the cycleway are open to the public and can be used.
Closing the gaps:
A link between stage one Hugo Jonson Drive – old Manger bridge (completed
2007) and the section along side Transit’s SH 20 (completed in 2009) will be
provided as part of the Onehunga cycling and walking improvements
A 365m long section of the 12km cycleway is proposed to pass through Winstone
Park, on the north side of Mt Roskill. This final section is being designed to
link in with the cycleway along the State Highway 20 Mt Roskill extension and
will be constructed in mid financial year 09/10.
The name, Waikaraka, came out of consultation with iwi and reflects the
proximity to water (wai) and the karaka tree. The name is currently used for the
park by Pikes Point.
