Transport in Auckland
The underground station at Britomart is connected to the rail corridors via an underground
tunnel near the Beach Rd railway station, and receives suburban and
inter-city trains coming from the west, south and east.
The transport interchange makes existing services faster and more
convenient, but the design is also flexible enough to allow for changes in the
future. It could be adapted for trams or light rail travelling on Queen St, and
there is the potential to build a new rail link from the CBD to the western line
and the North Shore.
Britomart provides people with more options for travelling around the
Auckland region, whether by bus, train, or ferry, with easy transfers between
trips.
While the completion of this important project is a big step forward, more
work is needed to deal with growing traffic congestion.
Auckland City is working closely with other agencies to make improvements to
the region's transport network over the next 10 years. These plans include:
- new and refurbished trains by 2006
- investigating a central transit corridor through the central city, from
Britomart to Newmarket, for completion by 2006
- creating a North Shore busway from the harbour bridge to Albany by 2006
- upgrading ferry terminals and suburban railway stations, double-tracking
of the western line by 2008
- urgent completion of the motorway network by 2013
- the proposed Eastern
Transport Corridor
- investigating new bus
priority lanes on the city's main roads over the next three years.
