Back to bus priority measures
Mt Eden bus lanes
Auckland City Council is committed to providing Aucklanders
with quality infrastructure and more sustainable travel options. As Auckland
continues to grow, alternative transport choices will become increasingly
important to ease road traffic.
Mt Eden Road is a core part of the regional passenger
transport network and one of the Auckland Regional Transport Authority's Quality
Transit Network (QTN) routes. We are therefore introducing extra measures to
give bus priority on Mt Eden Road as part of our Buses First Programme.
Following on from public consultation about the proposed changes to Mt Eden
bus lanes in 2008, Auckland City Council made changes to the original proposed
design to take into account the feedback.
Benefits
This project aims to provide a faster and more reliable
journey time for the approximately 4000 passengers currently using the Mt
Eden Road
corridor daily during the peak travel times, by extending the existing bus
priority lanes.
The proposed works will construct more bus priority lanes along Mt
Eden Road Corridor that will:
- improve operational efficiency of buses and reduce bus passenger
travel time
- make bus journeys along this route more reliable
- provide for a more reliable alternative transport
choice for commuters accessing business centres such as CBD and Mt Eden
Village
- future proofing services from the effects of growing
traffic congestion
- provide better connection with existing bus
lanes in the CBD, including the Central Connector route that is
under-construction.
Project Details
This project will deliver the following:
New bus lane: Hillside Crescent South to Batger Road
(Outbound 4-6pm).

Existing bus lane time change: Disraeli Street to Balmoral Road (Outbound 4:30-5:30pm to be changed to 4-6pm)

New bus lane: Duke Street to Peary Road (Citybound 7-9pm)

Work will begin in late September 2009 and is expected to be
completed before the end of November 2009. A traffic management plan will be in
place throughout the project area to minimise traffic disruption.
