Changes to key intersections

Following the council's urban design review, intersections along the route have been redesigned to maximise pedestrian safety. Restricting some traffic turning movements improves flow along the route and reduces the number of vehicles that come into conflict with pedestrians crossing at intersections. Extending kerbs at intersections reduces crossing distances for pedestrians, provides additional waiting areas and slows turning traffic. The addition of textured crossings provide a visual cue for motorists to slow down and look out for pedestrians.

Mount Street and Symonds Street

  • Right hand turns in and out of Mount Street will be banned.
  • The kerb will be extended and a textured crossing added to make crossing safer for pedestrians.

Alfred Street, Symonds Street and Grafton Road

  • Alfred Street will be reduced to one exiting lane with both left hand and straight ahead driving movements banned.
  • On Grafton Road, a single pedestrian crossing will replace the existing staggered crossing.
  • Motorcycle parking facilities will be provided on Symonds Street to replace those that have been removed from Alfred Street.

Beach Road and Anzac Avenue

  • New signalised crossings on both streets will also help improve pedestrian safety and replace the old staggered crossing on Anzac Avenue.
  • A bus-only right hand turning lane will give priority to cyclists and public transport.
  • Existing trees on Beach Road will not be removed.
  • There will be new planting outside the Scene Apartments.
