Central connector

Traffic, noise, air quality and community needs
Studies of the Central Connector project have looked at the
effects of the corridor on other traffic.
They indicate there will be a significant reduction in
traffic on Park Road and Karangahape Road. Closing Grafton Bridge to
approximately 13,000 private vehicles per day will result in traffic being
redistributed to Khyber Pass, the Wellesley Street extension and Lower Domain
Drive. The redistribution of traffic isn't expected to cause congestion or
delays.
A study of potential noise effects indicates that any
increase in noise levels will not be noticeable along most of the route.
In March 2004, Auckland City Council's Transport Committee
endorsed the CC project on the basis an agreed plan was produced to improve
emissions from buses on the route. This is plan is currently underway. The
committee has also agreed that only low-emission buses will be able to travel on
Grafton Bridge and Park Road once the new route is complete.
Studies show that the absolute level of emissions is expected to decrease
significantly due to the introduction of new low-emission buses along the new
route.
