Introduction
The Auckland-Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (Ameti) is a passenger
transport, walking and cycling infrastructure and improved roading project. It
will deliver more travel choice for Aucklanders wanting to access the regions
eastern suburbs.
Ameti is key to unlocking the economic potential of the eastern suburbs and
partnering the Tamaki Edge area through improved transport connections.
Ameti will provide:
- better access to and within Auckland's eastern suburbs
through more transport choice
- easier, more effective access to passenger transport,
walking and cycling
- increased road capacity that are attractive as well as
functional.
Ameti is a joint project between Manukau and Auckland city councils and the
Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA).
Economic benefit and Ameti
With the expected growth in the city's eastern suburbs, economic benefits
will only be fully realised if access and connections are improved. With the
following activities planned to accommodate this growth, more transport choice
is vital.
Resident population in the Tamaki Edge area is
expected to increase from 30,000 (2001) to 60,000 (2030), while employment is
forecast to increase from 12,000 jobs to 34,000 jobs.
- The Mt Wellington Quarry development will add around 8,000 people to
the area.
- Manukau City Council's Flat Bush development will create 40,000 new
residents.
- The University of Auckland's Tamaki Campus is expected to swell from
3,000 to 10,000 students.
- Nearby businesses are expected to change to support the science, ICT
and biotech industries, fuelled but the interests and research of the campus'
capability.
What
is AMETI?
The Auckland-Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) is a passenger
transport, walking, and cycling infrastructure programme, with supporting local
road improvements.
AMETI intends to provide more transport choice and better access through
eastern Auckland for people, goods and services by:
- increasing rail and bus services
- developing bus lanes along arterial routes such as Mt Wellington and Ellerslie
Panmure highways
- enhancing existing roads and building new links to complete the local road
network
- improving walking and cycling facilities
- working with the community to develop travel plans for large businesses and
schools.
