Ferries
Auckland City supports improved levels of service and continues to improve the wharves and terminals it owns and maintains. For example, in conjunction with the Ferry Users Group, a $3.2 million upgrade of the Matiatia terminal on Waiheke Island has been completed. Additionally, Auckland Regional Transport Network Ltd is upgrading the downtown terminal, providing another three berths, weather-protected areas, modern ticketing and real-time passenger information. Ferry services are developing as a vital form of transport for both residents
and visitors to Auckland and play an important role in reducing the city's
congestion. About 10,000 Aucklanders live on the Hauraki Gulf islands and demand
is growing for ferry services from the North Shore, Half Moon Bay and the upper
harbour.
