Neilson Street upgrade
Auckland City is evaluating options for managing existing and future traffic,
and the effects of increased commercial development along Neilson Street.
This route plays a major role in Auckland's road network accommodating
connections to the motorway, Onehunga town centre and the industrial area
surrounding Neilson Street.
By upgrading Neilson Street the council is looking to:
- manage traffic and development growth along Neilson Street
- provide a high quality link between SH20 and SH1
- identify any property requirements for the upgrade to
proceed
- improve the streetscape and landscape of Neilson Street
- underground existing overhead utilities
- provide for all users of the route, including trucks,
buses and pedestrians
- improve safety and traffic efficiency.
Some of the proposed improvements include:
- upgrading intersections from Gloucester Park Road to Church Street
- widening the road to provide four traffic lanes and
associated medians
- potential local bridge crossings across Manukau Harbour
- working with Transit New Zealand to co-ordinate changes
to the Gloucester Park Road intersection, and widen the State Highway 20 Manukau
Harbour crossing.
The council will identify a preferred scheme for the upgrade of Neilson
Street later in 2007.
