Oneroa northern service lane
Oneroa village, the main shopping centre on Waiheke Island, is an increasingly
busy area and traffic congestion is fast becoming a concern. One measure that is
being taken to ease this problem is the construction of a northern service lane
and small parking area for commercial vehicles and private vehicles that need to
access local businesses.
The project aims to ease congestion in the centre of Oneroa village by
diverting trucks and business-related parking down the service lane and away
from the main street. The end result will better manage the large numbers of
people that visit the island and travel through the village centre - ultimately
making life easier for residents and businesses.
The northern service lane will provide access to the rear of
the properties from 141-153 Ocean View Road, Waiheke Island. Delivery vehicles,
business owners and shoppers will have access and extra parking within this lane.
Construction of the new service lane will run from January - July 2004, with a
total construction cost of $700,000. The first few weeks of the project will
involve minimal disruption, as this is when site establishment is taking place.
Much care has been taken to ensure that the area will be
properly restored once work is complete. The service lane itself will
incorporate decorative road feature bands, landscaping and decorative raised
pedestrian tables as well as surface colour enhancement. A number of trees in
the area have also been transplanted to ensure that there is minimal disruption
to the environment.
This is a long-running project that has been the cause of much public debate
- we're doing our best to ensure that the project runs smoothly and that any
construction work has a minimal impact on Oneroa businesses, shoppers and
residents.
