How to use roundabouts correctly
Roundabouts are designed to make driving simpler and safer.
If road rules are followed correctly, roundabouts should present no problem for
any driver. Every year, however, there are around 140 injury accidents at
roundabouts.
Here are some simple tips on how to drive through
roundabouts without becoming a crash statistic.
Know who to give way to:
The most important rule is to give way to all vehicles that
will cross your path as you enter the roundabout. For your own safety, be
prepared to stop even if others are meant to give way to you. Remember to use
your indicators and signal left before you exit.
If you are driving straight through a roundabout:
- don't signal as you approach the roundabout
- signal left after you pass the exit before the one you
intend taking
If you are turning left:
- signal left as you approach the roundabout and keep
signalling left as you exit.
If you are turning right:
- signal right as you approach the roundabout.
- signal left as you pass the exit before the one you intend
taking.
Multiple lanes
- Multi-laned roundabouts are marked with lanes and arrows to
help you enter and leave the roundabout correctly.
- Not all roundabouts are marked the same way. The safest
way to approach a roundabout is:
- slow down as you approach the
roundabout.
- pay attention to the road
markings.
- get into the correct approach
according to where you want to exit.
