Ramp signals
NZ Transport Agency is introducing ramp signals at the St
Marks Road and Khyber Pass Road southbound on-ramps to the Southern Motorway from 15
October 2007.
These will be followed by signals on the Grafton Road,
Symonds Street and Hobson Street southbound on-ramps on 23 October 2007.
Initial delays are expected at the motorway approaches as
traffic adjusts to the new ramp signalling measures and the system is fine
tuned. The council is working closely with NZ Transport Agency and monitoring local roads to
ensure they are not compromised by gains on the motorway over the long-term.
Ramp signals - traffic lights at on-ramps that manage the
rate at which vehicles move down the ramp and onto the motorway - are designed
to help improve traffic flows and safety on the motorway, while enabling more
consistent speeds, safer merging and more predictable travel times. The signals
operate only when necessary, during the morning and afternoon peaks and other
busy periods. At all other times they remain off.
The Grafton Road on-ramp will incorporate the first trucks
only priority lane, to allow trucks to bypass the ramp signals while they are
operating. The priority lane will help improve heavy vehicle flow, giving them
smoother access onto the Southern Motorway.
NZ Transport Agency's total ramp signalling project is expected to cost
around $43 million and involves installing ramp signals at 61 motorway on-ramps
on the southern, northern and northwestern motorways and in the central motorway
junction (CMJ).
Construction started in November 2006 and is scheduled for
completion in July 2009.
