New pedestrian countdown clocks in Queen Street are part of a package of pedestrian improvements designed to transform the CBD into a thriving world class destination.

In a New Zealand first, six LED (light emitting diode) clocks have been installed at the signalised crossing on Queen and Victoria streets.

The road safety devices work by displaying a walking green man for six seconds, followed by an orange countdown display for 20 seconds.

The innovative project is designed to take the guess work out of crossing some of Auckland's busiest intersections and stop people racing across the road when they have run out of time to cross.

The countdown timer trial is part of Auckland City's Queen Street upgrade and funded through the CBD targeted rate.
