Eight high-risk schools in Auckland city have 40km/h
school speed zones to make it easier and safer for children near their
school.
The schools are selected using Land Transport New Zealand criteria that
states that there must be high speeds past the school and a significant level of
on-road, school related activity.
The majority of the schools on the selection list are
primary and intermediate, where the risk of injury is higher than at secondary
level.
Research has shown that not only do school speed zones slow
traffic, they also increase driver awareness of the presence of children,
helping to reduce the risk of crashes around schools.
School speed zones operate at the beginning and end of each school day and
for 10 minutes at any other time of day when 50 or more children are crossing
the road. High visibility electronic signs are installed on each approach to
the school zone, with static signs on adjacent streets, clearly alerting drivers
when they are entering or leaving the zone.
The signage is operated by the school principal (or
delegated staff) using a timer located within a secure control box in the
school.
The current schools on the list are primary schools, with Intermediate and
secondary schools yet to be assessed. Primary schools are the highest priority
as this aged school children are at the highest potential risk of injury.
