Auckland City Council is
planning improvements the Sandringham Road and Mt Albert Road intersection.
Sandringham and Mt Albert
roads are busy arterial roads carrying over 40,000 vehicles daily. The roads
serve key bus routes and a popular cycling route.
The intersection is an
important junction in the city's transport network and is at capacity during the
morning and afternoon peaks. This is causing delays for buses and motorists.
Additionally, the intersection
has an unsatisfactory safety record based on data collected over the last five
years. Within a 50m radius of the intersection, 60 crashes have been recorded.
The council's changes to the traffic light phasing have already reduced the
number of accidents, but there is still room for improvement.
The council is proposing a
package of solutions that will make the intersection safer for all users,
improve capacity and increase transport choices in the area.
The proposal will require the
use of designated land along Sandringham and Mt Albert roads. To make the
improvements, around 22 property frontages would be affected. The council has
already been in touch with these property owners to discuss the proposal and its
impacts in greater detail.
Construction of the
improvements may not begin until 2009, but it is important to start planning
for the work now.
