Sandringham and Mt Albert roads intersection upgrade

Background | Preparing for the future | What's proposed | Have your say

What's proposed

The proposed changes will benefit all users of the intersection, that is bus passengers, cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians. Specific safety and capacity improvements include:

  • adding a dedicated right turn lane at each approach of the intersection
  • extending the existing bus lanes along Sandringham Road for citybound and outbound bus services
  • creating on-road cycle lanes along Mt Albert Road
  • adding cycle advance bays at each intersection approach
  • providing wider footpaths and creating a landscaped strip between the road and footpath
  • putting the utilities such as power and phone lines underground.

Key benefits of the proposal

While the proposed improvements will increase safety and ensure the intersection continues to function into the future, it also includes the following benefits:

Advance bays for cyclists

  • Dedicating a space on the road at this key intersection will increase safety by ensuring cyclists are in front of vehicles and are easier to see.

On-road cycle lanes

  • On-road cycle lanes will improve safety for cyclists using Mt Albert Road.

Parking for businesses

  • Indented parking spaces for six vehicles will ensure access to local businesses is retained.

New bus lanes

  • The proposed bus lanes along Sandringham Road will build on those already in place, making bus travel in the area quicker during the morning and afternoon peaks. The bus lanes are also shared by cyclists and motorbikes.

New footpaths and more trees

  • Plans include upgrading footpaths and planting more trees at the intersection to make it easier and more pleasant to walk and cross these busy roads. The proposal will see around 30 new native trees planted in the area while a grass berm will serve as a buffer between pedestrians and vehicles.
