Great South Road and Sylvia Park Road intersection upgrade

The intersection of Great South Road and Sylvia Park Road currently facilitates the flow of between 30,000 and 37,000 vehicles per day. In the early 90s, Auckland City identified the intersection as an area that needed to be upgraded to regional arterial route standard.

An initial upgrade plan was prepared in 1994, but was subsequently reduced following lower than predicted traffic growth after the completion of the south eastern arterial route.

Physical work on the upgrade began in November 2002 and completed in August 2004.

The project was announced winner of the Roads and Transport category at the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Award 2006.

Improvements

The objectives of the $9.5 million upgrade are to improve the safety of the intersection, and cater for increased traffic growth in the area. To achieve these objectives, the upgrade will include:

  • widening the road from three to five lanes at the intersection and creating a better road layout
  • construction of a new railway bridge to comply with current Tranz Rail standards
  • construction of new footpaths and cycle lanes
  • the introduction of a new traffic light phase for motorists turning right from Great South Road into Sylvia Park Road, as well as a free left-turn lane from Great South Road into Sylvia Park Road
  • realigning the road level to provide for a safe 'line of sight' in the area of the railway bridge and improved management of road surface stormwater flow
  • relocation of a number of utility services following completion of the rail overbridge
  • the implementation of new measures to control stormwater flooding and wastewater treatment.

As well as providing improved traffic flows and traffic safety, an economic analysis indicates that the work will prevent injuries and result in a saving of about $20 million over a 25-year period.
