Motorway ramp signals
Motorway Ramp signals
Ramp signals are traffic lights at motorway on-ramps that
manage the flow of traffic onto the motorway during peak periods. When lights
are red, vehicles stop and wait for the green signal. When lights turn green,
two cars (one from each lane) are able to drive down the ramp to merge easily
with motorway traffic. Ramp signals run on a quick cycle, only a few seconds
between green lights. Ramp signals are switched on only when necessary,
especially during morning and afternoon peaks and other busy times.
Ramp signals are installed and operating on:
- Curran
St and Wellington northbound on-ramps
- new
Northwest to North (SH16 - SH1) northbound link
- Port
to North (SH16 - SH1) northbound link
- St
Marks Road on-ramp (southbound)
- Khyber
Pass on-ramp (southbound)
- Grafton Road on-ramp (southbound)
- Symonds Street on-ramp (southbound)
- Hobson

- Greenlane on-ramp (southbound)
- Ellerslie-Panmure on-ramp (southbound)
Ramp signalling systems are widely used internationally and
have been shown to reduce congestion and improve traffic flows. This results in
more consistent travel times, safer merging and fewer accidents.
