Future changes to the road network around Wellesley Street
Auckland's CBD Into the future strategy aims to make the CBD one of the
world's most vibrant and dynamic business and cultural centres. For this to be
achieved, the CBD must be a destination not a through route for traffic
travelling across the city.
To assist in achieving this vision, access to the lower part of Wellesley Street, between
Kitchener and Lorne streets, is mainly restricted to buses.
A right-turning lane into Kitchener Street has been made longer to reduce
traffic queues for those heading towards the mid-city area and the Victoria
Street car park. All remaining traffic will be diverted left along Mayoral
Drive to the western end of the CBD.
These changes will mean that
- no vehicles except buses will be allowed to enter the lower part of
Wellesley Street East (between Kitchener Street and Lorne Street), unless
they are coming up from Queen Street
- vehicles coming from the top of Wellesley Street East must turn left
into Mayoral Drive, or right into Kitchener Street
- vehicles from Mayoral Drive must go straight ahead into Kitchener
Street, or turn right into the upper part of Wellesley Street East.
