Re-siting or removal of public art works
Public art works enhance and enrich public spaces and the liveability of our
city, providing visual interest to an urban area. They help reflect Auckland's
unique identity and contribute to a 'sense of place'. There is recognition,
however, that as cities evolve, people and places may change. Therefore, from
time to time, there may be reasons to review the location or retention of a
public art work.
In 2006, a policy was adopted that governs decision-making around the re-siting or removal of
Auckland City's outdoor public art works.
The policy outlines the decision making process in detail:
- who needs to be involved?
- in what way?
- what options will be considered?
- how will these be implemented?
Removal of public art works will only be considered after careful and
impartial evaluation and undertaken only when no other option exists. Decisions must involve the same degree of careful review as
any new public art commission; informed by professional judgement and the interests of the public, and proceed according to carefully
developed processes.
The policy was updated in 2009 to align with 'Art in public places: Auckland
City Council's public art policy'.
