Glossary
| Arts and cultural precincts |
The areas of the city which have a particular arts or cultural theme. Precincts may include a broad
range of features, including art galleries, heritage buildings, libraries, museums, bookshops, public art works,
performance and entertainment venues or concert halls. Smaller 'niche' precincts include the High St fashion precinct
and the entertainment precinct which surrounds Aotea Square. |
| Arts Regional Trust |
The independent charitable trust established by Auckland and Manukau City Council to administer funds
set aside for significant arts and culture projects in the Auckland region. The Trust's objective is to grow the funds
and make distributions from income in order to create a legacy for arts and culture in the region. |
| Artists Quarter |
An area of the city where a large number of artists live and work – one building, several buildings in
one street or neighbouring streets, or a small city block. A range of spaces may be available, including studio and
living quarters, rehearsal and performance spaces, galleries, shops and other arts-related activities. Artists quarters
are often established in run-down areas, breathing life into them and resulting in economic revitalisation. |
| Artstation |
Artstation is a Council owned and operated community arts centre whose objective is to support local
visual arts and emerging visual artists. It has a small community art gallery and runs a wide range of educational
classes and workshops. Some studio and office space is made available for artists and arts organisations. |
| Community Cultural Development |
Describes a way of working together with the arts in communities. It is based on values which emphasise
people doing things together which expand their awareness and understanding of the meanings life has for them, by
making images and symbols which illuminate that meaning. It is people telling their own stories and expressing their
vision of themselves. Community cultural development tends to emphasise process as much as product, seeing an important
relationship between the quality of the participation, the degree of community ownership and the relevance of the final
product. |
| Creative Industries |
(UK definition) Those activities which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and
which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property. |
| Flexiform Venue |
A theatre with a movable stage and seating which allows performances to be configured in a range of
different ways. |
| Industry Clusters |
Arise from long term strategies to concentrate or cluster producers, suppliers, policy frameworks and
research resources in relation to an identified industry within a city or region. The synergy arising from clustering
creates benefits for individual operators, the industry and the city or region. |
| Industry Incubators |
Are spaces that provide access to shared and subsidised resources, services and support for new
entrepreneurs, usually for an agreed period, to enable them to grow or incubate their enterprise and become more
independent, eg. High Street Fashion Incubator. |
