Four organisations are involved in transforming the waterfront
During the past few years, organisations with a stake in the city have worked
with Aucklanders to realise the potential of the area stretching from the
Harbour Bridge to Mechanics Bay.
Auckland City Council
Auckland City Council will purchase, develop and fund public spaces such as
high-quality streetscapes, promenades, parks and plazas. It also funds and
manages the city's infrastructure, which includes local
roads and stormwater and the protection and management of heritage sites and
buildings. Auckland City Council will work alongside other authorities to ensure
quality development.
Auckland City Council also has a key regulatory role in determining the
planning framework and future of the waterfront area through the District Plan
and zoning processes.
As an infrastructure provider and a landholder in the area, Auckland City
Council has taken an active role in facilitating property development in the
city.
Auckland Regional Council
Auckland Regional Council (ARC) is the planning authority responsible for
setting the overall direction of regional planning.
The ARC manages the region's natural and physical resources and is
responsible for regional growth and development, transport strategy and
delivery, regional parks and recreation, air and water quality, the coastal and
marine environment, and natural and cultural heritage.
The ARC group includes Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) and
Auckland Regional Holdings (ARH). ARTA is responsible for various transport
activities across the region, and is funded by the ARC through regional rates
and from funding provided by ARH, Land Transport NZ and revenue from services.
Auckland Regional Holdings
Auckland Regional Holdings (ARH) is a statutory investment management entity
funding regional transport and stormwater programmes.
One of ARH's main functions is to generate returns from its investments to
invest in regional transport and stormwater programmes. ARH has an independent
board of directors and is accountable to the Auckland Regional Council.
ARH owns 18.5 hectares in Wynyard Quarter and it will oversee the commercial
redevelopment of this area.
Ports of Auckland
Ports of Auckland owns and operates the Port of Auckland and the Port of
Onehunga. The company handles nearly half the country's full import containers
and 43 per cent of the North Island's export containers. As well as its
container business, Ports of Auckland also provides general wharf and marine
services and logistics facilities including inland ports.
Ports of Auckland owns the bulk of the land - around 80 hectares - on the
waterfront stretching from Wynyard Point to Teal Park. POAL transferred
ownership of 18.5 hectares of land in Wynyard Quarter to ARH on 1 April 2007.
