Introduction
Wynyard Point, also known as the tank farm, represents a unique regeneration
opportunity for Aucklanders. The large-scale (35 hectare) reclaimed area is a
landmark close to the central business district and surrounded by water.
As leases currently held by the bulk liquids industry and other activities
expire over the next 20 years, there is potential to redevelop both the land for
residential and commercial purposes and enable the marine and fishing industries
to keep operating.
Regenerating Wynyard Point will contribute to Auckland becoming a world-class
city.
This area can provide more places for Aucklanders and visitors to enjoy the
waterfront while providing much-needed capacity for growth.
Auckland City's main interests are in getting the right amount and type of
public open space, an efficient transport network, and infrastructure and
managing the form of development. We also want to make sure that urban design
reflects the character of the area and that the marine and fishing industry are
part of the Wynyard Point's future.
Auckland City has developed a concept for the area and asked for your
views to help it make changes to the District Plan. The District Plan will
enable the right kind of development to take place. The concept is not detailed
designs, but gives a flavour of what could happen in the future.
From tanks to treasure
Very occasionally, cities get a one-off opportunity to add something very
special to the core makeup or character that defines them as a city. The future
development of Wynyard Point is such an opportunity.
Over the next few years we can turn this unique area into a place for
everyone, a place that cements the links between Wynyard Point's maritime
heritage, our wonderful city and the surrounding water.
We have one chance to get this right. What we decide about our waterfront
will be the legacy that we leave behind for our grandchildren and their
grandchildren.
The next step in unlocking the area's potential is a district plan change to
define the ground rules. Wynyard Point is for all Aucklanders, so we want to
hear from you. Your feedback is very important to us, so we want to consider it
before we go into the formal District Plan change process.
I ask you to read this information carefully and let us know
what you think about the ideas we have put
forward. This is a chance to help shape the kind of city Auckland will be in the
future.
Just to the east of Wynyard Point is an island called Te Wero. Te Wero means
the challenge. As Aucklanders, we must accept the challenge and rise to the
occasion, unlocking the wonderful potential this special area holds.
