Some residential areas in the city are currently covered by
special character zoning, however character is recognised in few of
the business centres in the Auckland isthmus.
A number of business centres have characteristics such as
streetscape or urban design elements which tie them together and are appreciated
by the local community. Some centres, due to the age or significance of
development, have heritage features which are also appreciated by the
community.
Auckland City has introduced specific guidelines to help to
protect the character of six traditional town centres of
the city. A study of the town centres and your feedback has provided the basis
for a district plan change.
The character overlay identifies buildings within each town
centre which are considered to be character defining or character supporting. It
seeks to protect them through either requiring resource consents for works on
buildings within the character overlay areas or by providing design guidelines
to assist applicants with their building or alterations.
Proposed
plan change 132 to introduce the character overlay was notified in September
2004.
A variation to this plan change, variation 132A, incorporating additional
information was notified on 8 May 2005.

variation 132A
and the summary of submissions on this site.
The character overlay could be applied to other centres, through further plan
changes, as they are identified over time.
