Community and library facilities plan

Library.Work has begun on the Community and library facilities plan - a 20-year plan that will ensure that we deliver the best and most accessible community facilities with the funds that are available.

The plan will outline:

  • the function of the council's community and social infrastructure
  • how the council will work with the community to ensure successful facilities
  • the improvements required to ensure that council's facilities are well-utilised and meet community needs.

The plan will illustrate the recommended changes to the current network of community and library facilities over the next 20 years.

To date, the following research and consultation processes have been completed:

  • a stocktake of council's community and library facilities network
  • general public consultation and input via CityScene, Listening Post and this website
  • citywide research including four focus groups with users and non-users of council facilities and an online survey completed by 1400 people
  • discussions with various subject experts and key stakeholders.

Community and recreation lease policy

The Community and recreation lease policy guides the provision of subsidised leases to community and recreation groups in Auckland city. The policy is part of our review of the Community assistance funding policy and the Community and libraries facilities plan.

A revised version of the policy was approved by the Community Service Committee in June 2009, following public and stakeholder consultation.

Why develop a plan?

Auckland City Council currently:

  • owns or supports 19 community centres
  • administers 29 community halls
  • owns two community offices
  • has 17 public libraries and one mobile library.

We also lease a large number of facilities to community groups under the Community and recreation lease policy.

Together these facilities deliver valuable services to Aucklanders. They provide learning opportunities, spaces for people to meet and interact and places for community activities. This project is an opportunity to review and improve our current network of community and library facilities.

Timeline

The project team are now reviewing the research results and feedback received from consultation. The draft Community and library facilities plan document will be presented to the Community Services Committee in 2010.
