Disability framework for action
Back to contents
Goal 6 – Auckland City continues to provide leadership in the area of disability
Objective: Make the general public, the business community and other councils
more disability aware
The greater the level of disability awareness within all sectors of the
community, the greater our ability to create a truly non-disabling society. It
is important that the general public, including the business community
and other local authorities, are aware of disability issues and Auckland City's
activities in this area.
1. Key action
Develop and implement a communication plan to promote disability
issues amongst the general public.
Rationale
Communicating the
positive changes Auckland City has made with regards to
accessibility is essential in order to encourage disabled people's
participation. It is equally important to make sure that the general
public are aware of these developments, in order to raise their awareness
of disability issues and contribute to reducing attitudinal barriers.
2. Key action
Publish articles on disability issues in local government
publications.
Rationale
Promoting discussion and best practice actions amongst local
authorities is key to facilitating a regional approach to disability
issues.
3. Key action
Initiate an Auckland regional forum on disability issues
Rationale
Allow for
discussion amongst and between local authorities, the business community,
and the general public on how we can work together on disability issues
and promote the New Zealand Disability Strategy.
