A

B

Ballast An electrical device used to limit current to lamps. It is inserted between the supply and the discharge lamp. A single ballast can control one lamp or an array of lamps depending on the type and configuration.

C

Colour rendering An electrical device used to limit current to lamps. It is inserted between the supply and the discharge lamp. A single ballast can control one lamp or an array of lamps depending on the type and configuration.
Control gear The electrical equipment needed for the operation of the lamp. Can include power factor correction gear.

D

Discharge lamp A lamp that sends an electrical discharge through an ionised gas to create light.

E

Efficacy It is a form of measuring the lighting efficiency. It can not be labelled efficiency because it has a unit. For lighting purposes efficacy gives an indication of the number of lumens per Watt of a lamp. The higher the efficacy the better.
Enhance prestige Lighting designed in such a way that it emphasises certain aspects of a building , structure or object.

F

Full cut offt A term used to describe light fittings that do not point any light upwards.

G

Glare Is the discomfort or imparment of vision due to excissively bright lighting.

H

Hollistic An electrical device used to limit current to lamps. It is inserted between the supply and the discharge lamp. A single ballast can control one lamp or an array of lamps depending on the type and configuration.

I

Illuminance The measure of illumination. It is the intensity of light falling on a given surface.
Inductive (inductor) A magnetic effect caused by a current carrying conductor.
IP rating IP ratings refer to the degree of protection (against dust and moisture) that is provided to the luminaire/lantern by its enclosure.

J

K

L

Lamp An electrical device that radiates light.
LED Light Emitting Diode.
Light pollution Excessive upward pointing light. This occurs when too much light is reflected/pointed upwards to the sky.
Lighting column Lighting pole used to support the out reach arm of the street light.
Lumens It is a measure of the perceived power of light. It is the SI unit of luminous flux. The unit is lux/m2
Luminaire The light fitting. It includes the lamp and the enclosure.
Luminance The brightness of the light in a given direction. (cd/m2)
Lux This is the SI unit of luminance. It is a measure of the intensity of light.

M

N

O

Outreach The distance from the centre of the luminaire to the edge of the outreach arm.
Outreach arm The section of the street light that extends out from the light pole.

P

Photocell A light sensor that measures light levels in a given space.
Power Factor A ratio of real power to reactive power. A power factor between 0.95 - 1 is acceptable with 1 being ideal. If the power factor should go below 0.95 then the power bill will start rising. Power factor correction can be used for systems with a poor power factor.

Q

R

S

Sky glow The effect of light pollution. Light pollution causes the sky to glow.
Spill light Light that falls outside of the area that it is intended to light.
IP rating IP ratings refer to the degree of protection (against dust and moisture) that is provided to the luminaire/lantern by its enclosure.

T

TCO Total Cost of Ownership
TLOR Total Light Ouput Ratio

U

Uniformity The measure of how evenly spread the lighting is. It is expressed as a ratio.
