Technical decisions

Many exterior lighting schemes will have prescribed standards, setting out light levels for a given situation. It is important to classify the area to be lit so the appropriate standards are followed and consistent light levels are achieved for similar sites across Auckland City.

The following are the main classifications of exterior lighting currently used by Auckland City Council. It is quite possible that the area you wish to light encompasses several different classifications. If this is the case the area should be broken down into component areas that can be classified separately.

Click on the links below to find further information on each exterior lighting classification.

  • Lighting for vehicles and roads (Not including pedestrian crossings)
  • Lighting for pedestrian crossings
  • Lighting for cycle-ways
  • White or yellow light
  • Electrical considerations
  • Total cost of ownership calculations
