Parking priorities
A key distinction is made between short stay parkers (parking for less than 4
hours) and long stay parkers (parking for more than 4 hours).
- Parking controls aimed at managing traffic congestion are directed at the
long stay parkers whose journeys generally coincide with peak commuter
travel periods.
- In contrast the council is seeking to encourage short stay parkers to the
central area.
Auckland City is a significant provider of short stay parking spaces in
central Auckland. It is the sole provider of on-street parking spaces and owns
and manages several parking buildings. It is only a relatively small player in
the provision of long stay parking.
