Rosebank Business Centre Report

<< back to contents

Introduction

The Rosebank business area has an integral function in both Auckland City and the wider region. The Rosebank area has become an established business centre location that supports many innovative Small Medium Enterprises (SME's) as well as large businesses that are owned both locally and by overseas parent companies. Growth continues to be a key characteristic of the Rosebank area where both the number and size of businesses in the area over the last 5 years has increased significantly.

The map below illustrates the level of concentration of businesses in the Auckland City area based on Statistics New Zealand meshblock level analysis. Interestingly, the Rosebank area has a high concentration density of business units per meshblock and compares favourably with alternative business centre locations in Auckland City.

Auckland City acknowledges the importance of the Rosebank area to the region through the working partnership between Grant Hewison, Manager of Economic Development at Auckland City and Perry Scarfe, President and Mike Gibson, Secretary of the Rosebank Business Association.

Specifically, the following qualitative questions form the basis of the report and ask:

  • What are your impressions of the Rosebank Road area
  • What are the main location advantages of the Rosebank area
  • What are the main location disadvantages of the Rosebank area
  • To what degree does the cost of land in your area affect your location decision?
  • Does land zoning affect your location decision
  • To what degree does proximity to (a) suppliers, (b) competitors and (c) locality of work force influence location decisions
  • What other locations would you consider in the Auckland region or elsewhere and why
  • Do you have any relationship with Government agencies
  • To what degree is your business interconnected to the wider regional and national economies
  • How well is your business being served by energy and telecommunications infrastructure
  • What are your thoughts on the regulatory environment that your business operates within
  • How do you rate Auckland City services

In addition, the following quantitative questions aim to identify business demographics (see attached appendices) and ask:

  • How many staff were employed five years ago, are employed today and expect to employ in five years time (app.1)
  • How many staff car spaces are required on a daily basis (app.2)
  • What percentage of businesses import and export (app.3)
  • How many container movements occur from your business site each week (app.4)
  • What is the nature of business ownership (app.5)
  • Which industry sectors are represented in the Rosebank area (app.6)
  • How do Auckland City Services rate (app.7)

Lastly, appendix eight lists all representative quotes gained from the research.
