Business Relationships with Local and Central Government
Businesses reported varied relationships with local government. Overall most
respondents viewed the services of Auckland City as good. However, some
respondents were disappointed that local government failed to consistently
consult and engage with business. Generally business wants to play a greater
role in strategic planning in their area. There was criticism of compliance
costs specifically the Resource Management Act. The timeline of applying for
and gaining resource consents was an issue that frustrated business. Respondents
were also asked whether they had any contact with central government agencies.
These were some of the responses.
"Yes. Employee Training and Apprenticeship Scheme."
"Mainly export orientated bodies or technical bodies i.e. Trade New
Zealand, New Zealand Trade Centre, Building Research Association of New Zealand
and Technology New Zealand."
Some respondents mentioned what organisations and industry bodies they were
members of. These were predominantly industry specific. Overall a significant
minority of businesses had contact with government agencies. Predominantly
businesses had contact with government agencies relating to workforce schemes
and agencies that were industry related bodies. This underscores the tight
labour market conditions currently existing in New Zealand.
Many respondents have little time to commit to consultative processes with
government as their primary focus is operating the business.
