The plan
In April 2010, the City Development Committee adopted the Tamaki Innovation Precinct 2040
business precinct plan.
Tamaki Innovation Precinct 2040 is a plan to facilitate the establishment of a technology-based industry and research precinct within Tamaki, attracting new business and employment opportunities in high-value industry sectors.
The plan will provide the framework for the renewal and ongoing development of the Innovation Precinct. It will foster an environment where research and technology-based businesses can locate with likeminded organisations and contribute to a sustainable future and prosperity in Auckland city and the wider Auckland region.
Council's vision and objectives
Council's vision for the Tamaki business area is that:
"The Tamaki Innovation Precinct is recognised internationally as New Zealand's sustainable centre of technological innovation and a hub of the knowledge economy".
There are three objectives for the precinct which underpin this vision, they are:
- economic revitalisation - ensure that the Tamaki Innovation Precinct acts as a catalyst for transforming New Zealand's economy
- build strong partnerships - work toward delivering the vision by taking an effective leadership role and building strong relationships with key partners
- sustainable and integrated development - ensure that planning and development of the precinct is aligned and consistent with the vision.
Outcomes sought
To achieve the above vision and objectives, council has developed a series of key outcomes sought through the implementation of Tamaki
Innovation Precinct 2040. These outcomes include:
- a successful innovation precinct enabling business and employment growth in innovative research and technology-based sectors
- land use within the precinct transitions to higher density, technology-focused employment use, along with mixed use activity complementary to surrounding town and local centres and business node activity around a reopened Tamaki
rail station
- the precinct has high local and citywide accessiblility by a well connected transport network that includes walking, cycling, bus, commuter / freight rail and road networks. There will be an emphasis on a quality pedestrian environment, designed for universal access, including improved links to surrounding centres and a reopened Tamaki
rail station
- well planned high quality infrastructure is provided that caters for future growth in the
innovation precinct
- the council's long-term goal of protecting and enhancing the area's unique volcanic landscape and open space features which will complement the precinct
- redevelopment within the precinct is high quality, with buildings well related to the public realm and aligning with the urban design framework
- businesses strive to gain competitive advantage including reducing their impact on the environment, and create a desirable destination for environmentally friendly businesses to locate.
