Essentially Waiheke

A village and rural communities strategy

Essentially Waiheke is a strategy to manage residential development that will occur as a result of population growth on Waiheke Island over the next 50 years. After extensive public consultation, this long-term plan was adopted at a council meeting on 12 September 2000.

The main purpose of the strategy is to establish a community approved framework for Waiheke's development and to signpost the directions towards a sustainable future, where opportunities for development are facilitated and the island's community values and outstanding natural environment are respected and nurtured.

The strategy is built on a set of five central principles, which were developed through a series of community workshops:

  • Environmental protection. Identify areas of Waiheke which are inappropriate for development because of environmental or amenity constraints.
  • Economic development and employment. Recognise the need to provide for local employment and business opportunities that are complementary to the character and lifestyle opportunities the island provides.
  • Strong communities. Identify opportunities to create a sense of place, a sense of belonging and a community that supports innovation, creativity and productivity.
  • Protection and enhancement of Waiheke's character. Recognise the importance of maintaining the unique character of the island, particularly by protecting the open character of rural areas.
  • Location. Guide the location and form of future growth related development.
