Introduction
The development of a waste management plan by councils is a statutory requirement under the Local Government Amendment Act (No. 4) 1996. It must
follow a special consultative procedure as set out in the Local Government Act 1974.
Waste can be solid, liquid or gaseous, however Auckland City's waste management plan focuses on solid waste.
The plan was first developed and adopted in 1999 and 2000. Like the District Plan, it has sections for the isthmus, central area and Hauraki
Gulf islands, in recognition of their different characteristics.
A review of the plan started in 2005. The isthmus section was adopted on 1 December 2005 and the Hauraki Gulf islands section on 27 February
2007. These sections have been combined in one document and once the central area section has been reviewed and adopted, it too will be added.
The central area section went out for consultation in 2007.
