Westhaven marina

Auckland City Council purchased the marina in 2004 for $46 million. With
around 1900 berths and moorings, it is one of the largest and most well-equipped
marinas in the southern hemisphere. It is also in a magical position as the
northern gateway to Auckland city.
Westhaven area (which incorporates Westhaven Marina and Harbour Park) is a
key component in the council's wider plan to create a wonderful
CBD waterfront
that everyone can enjoy.
Harbour Park
In 2007, Auckland City Council purchased one hectare of the area to the west
of the Harbour Bridge. Given its prime waterfront position, we want to
transform this underutilised land into a coastal park where people can fish,
stroll along the water's edge or sit in a park with magnificent views of the
city and the harbour.
Ideas for the area
We are working with stakeholders to create an overall concept
plan for the Westhaven area. This concept plan will guide future proposals for buildings, public outdoor areas, and
activities on land and the water.
The development of the overall concept will build on feedback council has
already received on Westhaven marina, the
Waterfront 2040 Vision and the
draft CBD waterfront masterplan.
Once complete, the overall concept design will include enough details to allow
feasibility studies and costings to be carried out.
Westhaven is a beautiful place and there is potential for it to be further
developed as a harbourside attraction for tourists and locals. Options include:
Public attractions
- create more places for the public to fish, walk along the water's edge
and enjoy views of sailing events and the harbour
- making a small beach area more attractive and accessible for the public
and an excellent, safe area for people to practice sailing small boats
- realigning Westhaven Drive in Harbour Bridge Park so that the grassed area is on
the water's edge.
We will not be including residential developments in any
redevelopment plans for Westhaven Marina, but may consider including a small
number of attractive new, low-rise buildings. These could combine the needs of
boaties and the public, with places for visitors to have a coffee or a meal
while enjoying the view as well as for businesses to provide services to the
marine industry.
Access and walkways
widening
and extending narrow walkways to create a more attractive and safe path
along the water's edge
- improving Westhaven's walkways is a key component of achieving a waterfront
walkway from St Heliers through to Herne Bay by 2040
- providing a connection to Wynyard Quarter and the CBD, if cycle access
is established over the harbour bridge
- building a new pedestrian bridge over the motorway to link Westhaven
Marina and St Mary's Bay
- linking the public boat slipway with the public beach area with a pedestrian
bridge and create a 'basin' area for sailing small boats off the beach.
Marina facilities
While we want to improve public access and amenities on the land, to make the
area more appealing to visitors, the council must also ensure the marina is a
successful business and facilities keeps pace with international standards by:
enhancing the existing land and water facilities so the marina continues to
be highly regarded here and overseas.
ensuring that recreational boating, charter services, boat clubs, coastal
services and the marine industry are the focal point at Westhaven and will
continue to be a priority in any redevelopment of the area.
